In my view listening and commenting on other artist music to get them to listen, comment and confirm your music is not necessary the best way to go.
Think about what you and your music and lyrics stands for and where people who possibly could like and attach to that can be. You would probably find that those places are not Myspace or GarageBand but more niched forums, communities, sites and blogs and so on. Make yourself availble in those places and let people find you. And when they do, build relations to them, listen to and reacts to their needs and they will spread your music.

On a more general note my biggest issue with "push" (besides being a "pest") is that it never works in the long term. You can of course get a lot of "friends" and "fans" but they have, from a marketing point, no value. They can't be "converted" to anything (CD-byers, street-teams, gig-audience). A "fan" pushed to you is not really a fan just someone getting pushed.
Pushing is almost always a lot of wasted time (and possibly money) that could be spent in a lot of better ways.

Haha, thanks Piper. Well, it seems to me from your answer that Google got it right, I think. :)

Basically this is about taking care about the people that love you and your music. If you do that properly, they will be more efficient spreading the word about you, than your best megaphone will. It's a big world out there, and your fans know their own friends better than you do.

I guess that you spend a lot of time on Myspace, from your answer. I would suggest you'd take that time and spent it on other places. It's important to know and cooperate with other bands, but as a way of getting to know fans? No.

Read blogs, (music blogs if you like, but also whatever blog that interest you). If you feel you have something to say, leave a comment, and see what happens.
Update your website to become an interactive webbsite, ie a blog and make it your digital net office. Have a music player there, where people can listen to the entire songs. Give some songs away for free and let it spread.
Start a Facebook fan page and talk to people there.

Well, it's just some basic points of what you can do.

This is really informative, and I'm glad to have found your article! I'm using a google translator, so I hope that what I say here makes sense.

The push/pull idea makes sense now. There must be a balance besides listening and commenting on the music of so many others. I find it's difficult to do this and write my own music without being too influenced by the other music. What other ways would you suggest making sure that the word gets out so that one doesn't end up being a pest?

(I really hope this translated well! *laughs* Sorry if it doesn't make any sense - If it doesn't I will try again another way.)

All the best,
